It pains me to see the same 15-20 people at every City Council meeting, and it pains me to see the same 20-30 people at every community rally for a good cause. But those pains are mere pin pricks compared to the pain of seeing a less than half full Mollenkopf Stadium tonight for the Harding football game.
It stopped raining at 6:00 and we were left with a lovely cool and clear early fall evening. A new, young, charismatic coach who is building character as well as an excellent team and his raised their record to 3-1 in an entertaining game. They played a hard-nosed, disciplined football game. And let’s not forget the always excellent Harding band.
At six bucks a ticket what better way to spend a Friday night is there in Warren?
We won the game but is our town losing the battle when only parents and die-hards come out to support this great community tradition? I wonder.

Wow, this is a shocker. I’ve been watching changes in Warren, many in the wrong direction, since the late 70s when the steel mills started closing.
I have come to accept the fact that many businesses have been shuttered, many houses have been abandoned, all the schools I went to are gone, the Golden Gate restaurant is gone, bus service is gone, etc.
Regarding the football team, I’ve even come to accept that “the Panthers,” “red and black,” the All American football conference, and the rivalries with Canton McKinley, Steubenville, and, most of all, Massillon (we don’t play Massillon??? are you kidding?) are gone. But I figured that the perpetual sellout of Mollenkopf stadium was forever.
Obviously, there are far more important issues. But this is a jolt. Thanks for noting this, Dennis.
Yes it is sad Leon. The town needs something to bring it together and Friday night under the lights used to do it. It did rain much of the day yesterday. I’m hoping it was just the fear that it would rain during the game. There were lots of empty seats last year when they went 2-8, but this is a good team. I’m hoping for a crowd next Friday.
Folks refuse to get over their red and black even if it has been 22 years. GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!
They pay big money and watch the stupid NFL when the
best football is played on Friday nights.
Dennis, you have to take into account that many, many former Harding supporters have moved into nearby townships or cities from which our kids and grandchildren now attend. It’s not about loyalty, but about physicality – nobody can be in the same different place at the same time. When Cardinal Mooney played Harding on a Saturday night, Jim,Daily, and 10 other people I know attended the game. Our son played football from 7yrs. old throughout college – so naturally we attended his games in Howland. Concerning why current fans don’t support their own team; I haven’t a clue! Hopefully they’ll show up in future!
I will be there with my son at the next game.
